Mouthguards, also known as night guards, are beneficial in treating teeth grinding and clenching. Teeth grinding or bruxism can cause tooth damage, jaw pain, and various other dental and health issues. Dental injuries are common in sports and various forms of recreational activities. Dr. Ma and our team can provide custom sports guards that fit perfectly and comfortably, allowing you to play at your best without having to worry about your teeth.
What is a Mouthguard?
- Fitting properly to your mouth and adapting to your oral structure
- Covering all teeth on a single arch
- Made of resilient, FDA-approved material
- Ease of cleaning
- Comfortable and secure fit
- Reduce forces if you face any impact when engaging in sports or other physical activities
Types of Mouthguards
- Custom-Made: A custom-made guard, as the name suggests, will be designed to mold to your teeth. It is properly structured to fit your mouth and is ideally comfortable.
- Stock Mouthguards: These mouth guards are available in all sizes, so you can find one that can match your teeth. They are usually designed to cover the top of the teeth and may not be as comfortable as custom-fit mouth guards.
- Boil & Bite Mouthguards: As the name suggests, you will boil this mouth guard to soften them before placing it over your front teeth.
Need for Mouthguards
- Teeth Grinding: A chipped tooth is a common sign of bruxism and places excess pressure on the tooth enamel.
- Sports Activities: Sports guards help reduce the potential risks of sports injuries.
- TMJ: TMJ is a condition that occurs when teeth clenching and/or grinding can cause the muscles around the jaw to become inflamed. Mouthguards help with this condition by preventing teeth clenching and grinding.
Some of the other reasons you may need mouthguards include conditions such as sleep apnea and snoring.
When you visit our dental office for your mouthguard, we will take an impression of your teeth. This will act as the mold of your mouth guard. You may need two appointments to complete the procedure.
